Move the analysis to the data, then combine standardised statistical outputs — rather than moving all patient-level data into one central database.
Interoperability
Common definitions and shared analytical routines make heterogeneous sources comparable without forcing replacement of local information systems.
Privacy by design
Individual data remain at the local source. The information exchanged across the network consists of standardised aggregate statistical outputs.
Reproducibility
Each centre can run the same analytical procedure independently and repeat it when required, producing outputs that can be compared and combined across the collaboration.
BIRO/EUBIROD architecture
The historical BIRO system combines common data definitions, a local database/statistical engine, aggregate exchange and central reporting. EUBIROD extended this model across European diabetes data sources and used it to produce comparable reports at provider, regional, national and international levels.
The architecture deliberately separates local patient-level processing from international information delivery. This section will host the original BIRO/EUBIROD architecture diagrams and current technical implementation material as the asset migration progresses.
